Blade stamped “IP” – John Prosser, London

This officer’s spadroon dates to the late 18th–early 19th century and bears the hallmark “IP” of John Prosser, London, one of the most respected sword retailers of the Georgian period. Prosser registered his overlapped “IP” mark in 1796 at Goldsmiths’ Hall and supplied high-quality blades and finished swords to officers of the British Crown and for export markets.

The sword features a brass hilt with urn-shaped pommel, single knuckle bow, and a straight, single-edged blade with narrow fuller. A small punch mark on the spine is consistent with Solingen manufacture, indicating the blade was forged in Germany and retailed through Prosser’s London shop.

Prosser’s swords are highly regarded by collectors for their craftsmanship, historical significance, and association with the Napoleonic and War of 1812 era. This example, with its documented IP hallmark, represents both the international nature of arms production and the status weapons carried by officers of the period.
