French M1829 Mounted Artillery Saber – Manufacture de Châtellerault, June 1854
A fine example of mid-19th century French military craftsmanship, this Model 1829 Mounted Artillery Saber was produced at the famed Manufacture de Châtellerault arsenal in June 1854, as confirmed by the spine inscription.
Blade: Original curved blade retains a pleasing aged patina with scattered surface oxidation. While showing its 170+ years of service and history, it remains structurally solid, straight, and without compromise.
Hilt: Classic brass three-branch guard with forward-swept quillon. Clearly stamped with rack number 246 and inspection proofs, reflecting its military service issue. The wood grip core is intact and tight. Although much of the original leather wrap and wire binding have been lost to time, the hilt assembly remains firm with no looseness.
Scabbard: Comes with its original steel scabbard, featuring twin suspension rings. The scabbard displays a dark, mottled patina with scattered pitting consistent with age, yet it remains complete and structurally sound.
This saber represents both the utility and elegance of French military edged weapons during the mid-19th century. With its arsenal engraving, solid condition, and original scabbard, it is an excellent piece for collectors of European cavalry and artillery arms.
