An authentic Japanese katana of traditional construction, this blade exemplifies the elegance and resilience of Edo-period swordsmithing. Forged in the shinogi-zukuri style with a pronounced ridgeline and graceful curvature, the sword features a visible hamon (temper line), likely in suguha form, confirming differential hardening by traditional methods.
The tang (nakago) displays a rich, untouched patina with clearly preserved file marks (yasurime) and an unusual three mekugi-ana (peg holes), evidence of multiple remountings throughout its life. The tang ends in a kurijiri (rounded tip), a form consistent with Edo workmanship. The blade is unsigned (mumei), a common occurrence in shortened (suriage) swords, where signatures were often lost during adaptation.
The koshirae (mountings) include a black ito-maki wrap over white samegawa (ray skin), decorated with gilt menuki ornaments. The fuchi-kashira are adorned in gold-toned designs, while the iron tsuba displays a tasteful sukashi (cut-out) motif. The saya (scabbard) is finished in dark lacquer and retains its sageo cord, resting in a patterned brocade bag, indicating careful preservation.
Historical Context
The sword’s features suggest an Edo-period origin, later remounted for continued use. The presence of three peg holes indicates successive fittings, possibly including military use during the early 20th century, when family swords were often carried into WWII. This blending of eras makes the piece a compelling historical survivor, embodying centuries of Japanese martial tradition.
