German Model 1889 Infantry Officer’s Sword (IOD89) – Nickel-Plated Parade Example with Scabbard
Offered here is a handsome German Model 1889 Infantry Officer’s Degen (IOD89), a lighter, more elegant sidearm carried by officers of the Imperial German Army. This example is a parade or private-purchase variant, distinguished by its fully nickel-plated hilt and guard rather than the more common brass finish.
The sword features a slender, straight blade measuring approx. 32–33 inches, with a long fuller and bright nickel plating that complements the hilt. The black grip with triple wire wrap remains tight and intact, showing only light age wear. The original steel scabbard is included, finished in black paint, which now displays flaking and service wear but is structurally sound.
Unlike issue examples stamped with regimental and maker’s marks, this sword bears no visible military acceptance stamps or maker’s logo, a detail often found on officer-purchased or dress-only swords of the period. This gives it strong appeal as a parade piece or interwar ceremonial sidearm.
A light, well-balanced, and visually striking sword, perfect for collectors of Imperial and interwar German edged weapons.
Condition: Nickel plating remains bright with areas of age patina. Grip wire tight. Scabbard retains about 50% of its original painted finish. Blade shows light wear consistent with age but no major damage.
