French Officer’s Cavalry Saber – Klingenthal, Dated May 1840

This is an authentic French officer’s cavalry saber, produced at the famous Klingenthal arsenal in Alsace and dated Mai 1840 on the spine. Klingenthal was the primary French state sword manufactory before production shifted to Châtellerault, and its blades armed French officers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Features:

  • Blade: Curved, single-edged with fuller. Spine engraved “Klingenthal Mai 1840”. Shows light patina and oxidation but remains solid.

  • Hilt: Brass guard with ornate floral and laurel designs, typical of officer’s grade sabers. Ribbed wood grip intact, with wire binding missing. Tight and solid.

  • Scabbard: Original steel scabbard with twin suspension rings, aged patina and spotting, structurally sound.

Condition:

Well-preserved officer’s saber with legible spine inscription dating it precisely to May 1840. Honest wear from age and service, grip wood exposed but strong, blade and fittings complete.

Collectability:

This saber is a genuine French officer’s weapon from the July Monarchy period, predating the 1848 revolutions. Officer-marked Klingenthal examples with clear dates are highly collectible, especially when paired with the original scabbard.
