Civil War U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword – Dated 1863
Authentic Civil War–era U.S. Model 1860 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword, regulation pattern carried by Union officers during the conflict. The blade measures 32 inches, single-edged with a long fuller, and retains a clean surface with light age patina.
The hilt is constructed entirely of brass, including the guard, knuckle bow, ribbed grip, and pommel, showing an untouched aged patina throughout. This is a sturdier, all-brass variation rather than the more common leather-and-wire wrap.
On the ricasso, the sword is clearly marked:
“U.S. 1863” date stamp
Inspector’s initials
These markings firmly place this sword in the Civil War period and make it a desirable collectible.
Condition: Overall solid and untouched, with honest field wear, age patina, and oxidation consistent with its 160+ years of age. Blade remains straight, guard and grip secure, and markings are legible. No scabbard present.
Historical Note: The Model 1860 was standard issue for staff and field officers (majors, colonels, aides, and other officers) and was more often a symbol of authority than a battlefield weapon. Carried throughout the Civil War, these swords are highly collectible when dated and inspector-stamped.
