Civil War U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber – C. Roby, Dated 1863

Offered here is an original U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured during the American Civil War by Christopher Roby of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts. This example is clearly marked on the ricasso with “U.S. 1863” and inspector’s initial “M” on one side, and “C. Roby, W. Chelmsford, Mass” on the other.

The saber features a classic curved, single-fullered blade, brass three-branch guard, and leather-wrapped grip with remnants of the original wire wrap. Blade shows age staining and patina consistent with its 160+ years of history, while markings remain clear and legible.

This pattern saber was the primary cavalry weapon of Union horsemen during the Civil War, carried by thousands of troopers in campaigns across the country. Roby was one of the major contractors supplying sabers to the U.S. government, making this a highly collectible and desirable example.

Condition: Honest, untouched example with patina, wear to the grip wrap, and expected blade staining. No scabbard. Overall a solid representative Civil War cavalry saber with excellent markings.

Length: Approx. 41" overall, with a 35" blade.
