Civil War Era W. Clauberg Cavalry Saber – 36.5" Blade, Steel Guard

Up for sale is an authentic 19th century cavalry saber, made by W. Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. Clauberg was one of the most prolific sword manufacturers of the era, exporting large numbers of sabers to the United States during the Civil War for use by Union cavalry.

Features:

  • 36.5-inch curved blade with single edge and broad fuller, ideal for mounted combat.

  • Blade stamped “W. Clauberg – Solingen” at the ricasso, confirming origin.

  • Steel three-branch guard, sturdy and protective, with a pleasing aged patina.

  • Original leather grip with twisted wire wrap survives in poor condition, with significant wear and loss — but remains as a testimony to its age and service.

Condition:

  • Blade: Solid, with patina and service wear but no major damage.

  • Guard: Intact with heavy patina, structurally sound.

  • Grip: Poor condition, leather and wire heavily deteriorated.

  • Scabbard: Not present.

Measurements:

  • Blade length: 36.5 inches

  • Overall length: approx. 42 inches

Notes:

This is a genuine Civil War era cavalry saber, not a reproduction. With its long blade, steel guard, and Solingen maker’s mark, it represents the imported sabers used in large numbers by Union cavalry during the conflict. Despite grip deterioration, the sword remains a strong and collectible example with rich patina and battlefield character.
