U.S. Model 1840 Noncommissioned Officers’ Sword
A fine example of the classic U.S. Model 1840 Noncommissioned Officers’ Sword, as officially adopted for use by the U.S. Army in the mid-19th century. This sword type is well documented and can be verified in several authoritative references, including Harold L. Peterson’s “The American Sword.”
Description:
This regulation pattern features a straight, single-edged blade with a wide fuller running nearly its entire length. The brass hilt retains its cast “half-basket” guard with simulated wire grip and integral knuckle bow. The pommel is a smooth, rounded cap typical of the early pattern. The steel blade remains solid, showing light age patina but no damage or repairs, and the overall construction is tight and sound.Notably, this example is offered without a scabbard.
Historical Note:
The M1840 NCO sword was issued to sergeants and other enlisted ranks from the 1840s through the Civil War era and beyond. Its distinctive simplicity and durable design made it one of the most recognizable sidearms of the 19th-century U.S. military.A classic and identifiable American military sword — an excellent representative piece for collectors of early U.S. edged weapons or Civil War–era militaria.
